We’re big fans of packing lists at Here Magazine. We’ve seen time and again how much you can learn about a person from the things they love and never leave home without.
As frequent flyers ourselves, there are plenty of books, accessories, and beauty products we consider must-haves, whether we’re hopping on a plane for a weekend trip or hard at work in NYC. To celebrate the launch of Away’s new Latitude and Longitude Totes, we’re sharing the little things we keep with us on the go—including everything from fantasy novels to international matchbooks, sparkly shoes, and dental floss. Below, a look at what we keep in our Monday Totes vs. Friday Totes.

Monday
First, my glasses, because I’m blind as a bat—nearsighted in one eye, farsighted in the other. Yikes. Then, my makeup bag: I use the toiletries pouch from my Away Bigger Carry-On and always carry Anastasia Beverly Hills foundation and blush, MILK makeup concealer, and Diorshow mascara, applied in that general order. For years now, I’ve carried a pocket edition of The Hobbit everywhere I go. I love high fantasy, and carrying a book whose major plotline kicks off with the words “I’m going on an adventure!” feels right considering my job.
Friday
I plan for both an introverted and extroverted Friday night. If I have enough energy left at the end of the week, I’ll probably go out with friends. In that case, I’ve got my Fenty Stunna lip paint and a little black dress (although I rarely wear heels—I usually dress the look down with Dr. Marten Jadon boots). But if I’m utterly exhausted and the introvert in me comes out, I’ll go to a cozy bar (St. Mazie in Williamsburg is my personal favorite lately), grab a cheap glass of wine, and read on my Kindle to unwind.

Monday
I truly am all business on Mondays, but don’t be fooled. Sure, I go to the gym in Lululemon, I do morning pages in my Moleskin with a Pilot Precise V7 (the only valid pen), and I’m the type of person who carries a pink filing folder—a folder!—for loose paper. But on this particular Monday, I forgot socks (and, according to these photos, pants?). I finished my morning pages on the train so my big brain dump ritual looks more like abstract sketchings from a preschooler, and that folder holds something I’ve been meaning to get notarized for like, six months. I swear I am a human being!
Friday
I actually call these shoes my “Friday Shoes,” and I wear them when I want to spice things up. I always throw this YSL Liquid Matte Lip Stain in my bag—once on, it’s super weightless and lasts forever—but I usually just wind up slathering Glossier Balm Dot Com all over my lips like the good Millennial consumer that I am. If I anticipate a night out where I may or may not make it back to my apartment, I’ll pack floss and travel-sized mouthwash. Matches are always good to have in your bag—I don’t smoke, but you just never know. They’re kinda sentimental too—I take them from bars I love all over the world.

Monday
My grandma raised me right: Always take your vitamins. I always have the drug-store essentials: CVS-brand Vitamin C tablets (though my grandma swears by Shaklee) and one Emergen-C packet for, well, emergencies. If I’m not reading on the subway, I’m the girl writing journal entries, either in my Hay x Design Miami notebook or my Eighty Days x Andy Tudy notebook from the MoMA Design Store. I’m never without Apple Earpods—with WIRES—because I am simply not responsible or cool enough to own the wireless variety. My weekly workout schedule is maybe the most regimented thing about me: spin in the mornings and barre and ballet in the evenings. I’ve been dancing since the fifth grade, but Mark Morris Dance Center’s beginner classes are my happy place.
Friday
I’ll never be an all-black-everything kind of New Yorker, but my rainbow personality comes especially alive on the weekends. I usually up my sparkle game with Glossier’s Glitter Gelée in Firewalk and Lip Gloss in Holographic with the occasional pop of Milk Makeup’s Holographic Stick in Supernova. Wacky earrings are by no means restricted to weekends, but these dancing danglers—one pair from Carla Fernández in Mexico City and one from Gorman in Melbourne—are celebratory enough for nights out. Tums Smoothies, Trident spearmint gum, a collapsible Que water bottle, and a hydrating Dr. Jart+ Water Replenishment cotton sheet mask are my reinforcements for wild nights (and mornings after).

MONDAY
It’s Monday and I’m doing! all! the! things! On my morning subway commute, you’ll find me either listening to a podcast (Design Matters and Longform are my favorites) or catching up on my New York Magazine reading—it’s the only publication I still get in print, and I try to avoid looking at my phone screen on my way into work. I’m usually trying to squeeze in a workout at New York Pilates or Sky Ting Yoga (or any class that doesn’t make you sweat or require bulky sneakers) before dinner or drinks with a friend after work. I use Tarte Creaseless concealer, Diorskin bronzer, and OMOROVICZA Queen of Hungary Mist to freshen up after class.
FRIDAY
I’ll be really honest, this is more like my dream Friday tote than my reality. But let’s roll with it. On this particular dream Friday afternoon, I’m leaving work at 5 p.m. and taking the subway out to Rockaway Beach. I have Trader Joe’s cashews and a canned Paloma cocktail for the ride out there, during which I’ll be reading My Sister, The Serial Killer, which I just checked out from the library, and a portable speaker because good tunes = good vibes. I picked up my new favorite swimsuit from Fortnight when I was in Toronto recently, and the scrunchie is from Cante in Lisbon. Good luck convincing me to abandon this blissful imagined paradise, but if/when I’m ready to head back to the city, I’ll use Ursa Major’s Essential Face Wipes and Recess Body Wipes to de-sand before catching the subway back home.
