Seeing Big Freedia perform is an unforgettable experience—much like visiting her native city of New Orleans, Louisiana. Here, the legendary bounce music artist shares her Crescent City-favorites—from the best performance venues to NOLA’s hidden gems.
The best part about living in New Orleans:
New Orleans is the most amazing city because we have so many different types of people, food, and music. It’s such a joyful place! The city has inspired me with jazz, second line bands, hip-hop, Mardi Gras Indians—all of New Orleans’ flavor has impacted me as an artist.
Performance venues:
I have a few favorite venues, but Republic NOLA is one of the best. They have a Bounce Night every week, so bring loose clothes and get ready to sweat! Siberia is also great for live music.
NOLA’s LGBTQ community:
You know, it’s really always been here, unchanged for decades. I’d say there’s more of a spotlight on it now. We haven’t changed as much as there’s more interest and excitement about it from the outside.
Favorite food spots:
Breakfast: Du Monde—coffee and beignets—or Stumptown Coffee.
Lunch: Neyow’s Creole Café—best red beans and rice in the city.
Dinner: Morrow’s—a new spot with the best crawfish pasta. It comes with fried fish on top and garlic bread.
Must dos:
Swamp and alligator tours are a MUST!
Favorite hotels:
I like smaller hotels, like the Ace Hotel and Catahoula Hotel.
NOLA’s hidden gems:
The Voodoo Museum and famous Voodoo priestess Marie Laveau’s Tomb.
Favorite drinking holes:
There are so many! Hangover is one and the bar at top of the Ace Hotel.
