Black Lives Matter. This is our pledge to fight racial injustice.
At Here Magazine we believe that travel is a means to educate yourself on diverse perspectives, beliefs, and experiences. Although uplifting marginalized voices is a cornerstone of our ongoing work, we acknowledge that we can—and will—do much more.
We stand in solidarity with our Black community. We are outraged by the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other Black Americans. We are vehemently opposed to the continuous acts of police brutality against both Black bodies and protestors who support the movement for racial justice.
This is how we’ve started to do better: Our parent company, Away, has donated to the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, The SPLC Action Fund, and The Bail Project. As individuals, we are also making donations, joining protests, signing petitions, calling our local politicians, having conversations, and expanding our education. We strongly encourage you to do the same. (If you have questions about how to get involved—write to us!)
We know that our work doesn’t stop here. While our content will always be inclusive, there is much more we can do to influence our community and engage with these issues outside of writing stories. As a travel publication, we recognize racism is a global issue, and we will actively work to dismantle systems that perpetuate it. Over the next few weeks, we will be examining ways we can positively impact the travel industry. We know that we have a platform that can affect change, and we are prepared to use it.
In the meantime, we’d love your thoughts on how to combat systemic racism in the travel industry. Please reach out to editorial@awaytravel.com with what’s on your mind. All questions, concerns, or comments welcome.
