Lo Bosworth may have gained her claim to fame on reality television show “Laguna Beach,” but these days she’s making her name in the media and startup worlds. In 2010, she launched a lifestyle website called The Lo Down, sharing her exercise tips and healthy recipes—plus interviews with female leaders on her Lady Lovin podcast. Last year, she added another business to her belt with Love Wellness, a line of feminine hygiene products that aim to change the conversation surrounding women’s health. And though both ventures focus on wellness, she definitely takes a balanced approach to travel, maintaining her workout schedule, but not stressing over food—she even eats the airline meals! Here, Bosworth talks her favorite hotel group, the best in-flight items (hint: cashmere), and the one thing she buys on every vacation.
“The Aman hotel group is incredible, so we’re sort of Aman junkies.”
Since I started dating my boyfriend two years ago, my travel days have increased significantly. He travels internationally for work a lot and so I’ve been able to see a lot of the world with him. We’ve been all over Asia. I think my favorite place we’ve been together is Tokyo. We just had an amazing vacation in the Dominican Republic. I don’t want to give away the secret but the Amanera on the north side of the Dominican Republic in the jungle is the most incredible place we’ve ever been to… The Aman hotel group is incredible, so we’re sort of Aman junkies. We go to these different resorts all around the world but yeah, probably once a month or once every six weeks I’m gone for about a week. Sometimes it’s to L.A., to southern California where my parents live. More often than not it’s to Europe or Asia somewhere.

“I always buy a new hat at the destination.”
I have always fallen into the “I will never check a bag” category, so you should see me try to squish my entire life into an overhead. But of course on longer trips we check bags. So I guess I do both at this point. I do not have a packing strategy and I always turn up in some foreign land without a white t-shirt or with only one pair of pants, so it’s neither here nor there. I pretty much bring my favorite stuff with me, but that doesn’t necessarily equal enough things to get by. I tend to forget the basics, to be honest. One thing that I do like to do is never pack hats. I always buy a new hat at the destination that I’m at – like a five dollar local piece off the street – but then I leave them in the room for the next person to enjoy because, I don’t know, do you ever see people with a hatbox on the airplane anymore? Hats get squished and ruined so it’s just a little fun thing that I do.
“I always travel with a really big cashmere scarf.”
Something that I always, always pack are my cashmere sweatpants from 360 Cashmere. I have them in a couple different colors and they’re perfect for lounging, they’re perfect for a quick breakfast at the hotel, or to throw on at the pool if you get a little chilly. They’re so comfortable, I even like to wear them on the airplane. I also always travel with a really big cashmere scarf by White + Warren – it’s almost the size of a blanket so you can really hide in it. I also always bring these Yoga TuneUp balls. I’ve been having problems with my right hip, so rolling out when I get to a destination with those always really helps and if you ever have any ache or pain you can literally just roll it out using your body weight on top of them which is really, really amazing. My favorite Love Wellness products to bring with me on vacation are The Killer and my pH Balanced Cleanser. I have sensitive skin and it tends not to agree with the soap a hotel provides, so the pH Balanced Cleanser is a go-to for safe, soothing, external cleansing. In case any hint of an infection or irritation pops up, The Killer can spot treat whatever is going on, leaving me free to enjoy my vacation or work trip.
“We get dressed up together and then we travel and it feels kind of old fashioned and fabulous.”
I typically get dressed for the plane. I don’t really travel in pajama-wear or loungewear. I think it’s in part because of my boyfriend. He doesn’t get suited up but he dresses up. He looks nice when he travels and so I’ve sort of taken a page out of his book in that regard. We get dressed up together and then we travel and it feels kind of old fashioned and fabulous. So that outfit might be a nice pair of trousers with a shirt tucked in, a comfy sweater and a long coat. Something like that, with boots and then if it’s an overnight flight or a long flight I’ll bring something to change into so that I can sleep a little more comfortably. Sometimes I’ll change in the airplane bathroom; it’s really like a balancing act in there because you don’t want to touch anything. Otherwise I’ll do kind of like a little shimmy into my comfy pants. Typically by that time the entire plane is really dark and most people have gone to sleep.
“It sort of creates this barrier between the air on the airplane and your skin.”
As far as in-flight beauty routines, I drink so much water. I’m always so dehydrated when I get off the plane and it really affects the quality of my skin. I have a Laneige Water Sleeping Mask, that is great for the airplane. It sort of creates this barrier between the air on the airplane and your skin. It’s great to sleep in. For an overnight flight, I don’t wear makeup – I go to the airport with my skin ready to go as if I were going to sleep. I lotion up a lot with Paula’s Choice “Resist” Barrier Moisture Repair with Retinol, and I use the chapstick that they give you a lot. I just try to stay as hydrated as possible.

“I eat the airplane food. Isn’t that disgusting?”
When I get on the plane, I sit down, relax, have the cheap champagne that they give you and just get ready to go. Typically we eat the plane food, we just go for it. I have to eat, and I’m not really that big on PB and J sandwiches squished in my carry on, so I don’t know. I might bring a piece of fruit or something. And there are ways to get around the weird stuff. You can get a vegetarian meal. You can get a Muslim meal. A Muslim meal on an airline is amazing – it’s a vegetarian meal. It’s lentils and all this delicious stuff so if you’re ever traveling internationally and they have that as an option, choose that. Normally these days airlines have fruit and stuff that you can have. But yeah, I eat the airplane food. Isn’t that disgusting?
“On vacation you really have no excuse not to exercise.”
I always work out on vacation. I don’t take a break. The workout gear just comes with me– I tend to lean towards long-sleeve shirts (the standard ones from Lululemon work great) and long tights (I love Lorna Jane’s tights) in case I take a hike or go on some type of outdoor adventure for some added protection from the sun. I also bring a pair of shoes I wouldn’t mind leaving behind if I had to in case they get really wet, sandy, or muddy. We go to the hotel gym or we go for runs outside. We try to make it work. For me it helps my energy balance every day. It helps me manage my anxiety. Honestly, exercise for me is both physical and mental and for a lot of people it is. You can start to feel crazy, so it’s always a relief, and on vacation you have really no excuse to not exercise. When we travel I think we do it differently than a lot of people. We wake up really early. We work out and then we go about our day. When I’m on vacation – especially if we’re somewhere tropical – 7 a.m. on the beach or at the pool is the best time to be there, before anybody else is awake. It’s the quietest hours on whatever property you’re at, and it’s so peaceful and nice and so we always make an effort to get up early no matter where we are and just go start the day. I’d rather take an afternoon nap.
“The afternoon nap is killer when you’re trying to get over jet lag.”
There’s no good way to get over jet lag. That’s the honest-to-god truth. You just suffer through it. If you are lucky enough to have some sleeping pills with you, use them, but I have not found a way to beat jet lag. There’s just no way. Exercise doesn’t do anything for jet lag. The only thing you can do is sleep or try to sleep, and try not to sleep at the wrong times. The afternoon nap is the killer when you’re trying to get over jet lag. Avoid it at all costs. If you’re going to Asia, avoid the afternoon nap because you will sleep literally until 2 a.m. and then you’ll be awake.
“Instagram has been a really great way for me to discover local spots when I’m in a country.”
We choose our hotel very carefully. We look for a great gym, great service, great location. My boyfriend has traveled internationally for work for over twelve years. He’s been everywhere; he knows. I kind of just follow his lead which is nice, to be honest with you. It can be daunting to go somewhere and have no idea what to do. You can even read the guidebooks but if you’re there with somebody who’s been there before I feel like it’s so much easier. Actually Instagram has been a really great way for me to discover local spots when I’m in a country. You just search for hashtags that are relevant to the neighborhood that you’re in. You just find great places that way, and the local spots.
