Right out of college, Jessica Wright turned down a Fortune 500 job to become an independent travel consultant. That, in turn, became Bon Traveler, an online platform where she shares stories and guides about destinations the world over. When she’s not zipping from Thailand to Greece or Jordan, she’s at home in San Francisco. And as a professional traveler, she knows how to find the best her city has to offer. Here, she shares her guide to SF.

When did you start Bon Traveler? What's your background?
I started the blog around three years ago while I was finding that my passion was photography and writing—it was first a creative outlet and then I branded it as Bon Traveler when I wanted to blog full time. Prior to starting the blog, I was a luxury travel consultant and specialized in custom trips, honeymoons, and destination weddings. I would describe my job as being multi-faceted. From being a creative in photography, design, and writing to being a business manager running marketing, sales, and accounting. All of these aspects play into my goal of inspiring others to break past barriers and explore all corners of the world.
Do you have a morning routine?
My morning routine seems to change on a regular basis, but it most always includes five to 10 minutes of silent sitting with setting intentions for the day, then one glass of warm water with lemon. Afterwards I make a cappuccino that I always drink out of these small jars (that I’ve turned into cups) and sit down to emails from there.
What are your must-dos in San Francisco?
Some of my favorite places to go are the neighborhoods of the Mission or Hayes to grab coffee and stop by boutiques. Sunset at Twin Peaks is a must, riding a bike along the Marina is stunning, and shopping local produce at the Ferry Building are staples of SF. Don't forget to see the Painted Ladies and take in the vista from Coit Tower!
Favorite hotel in the city?
Fairmont Nob Hill for the historic location and views. It's a beautiful location with easy access to most neighborhoods. Its historic significance is noted in the grandeur of the hotel, and makes for a classic welcome to the city.
What are some of the best Instagram backdrops?
Twin Peaks has the best bridge-to-bridge view. Plus, the top of Telegraph Hill, Golden Gate Bridge, and Crissy Fields.
Best outdoor destinations?
Golden Gate Park is the ultimate park. For beaches head to Ocean or Baker Beach. I like to hang out at Dolores Park when the sun is out!
Where in SF do you go for a stay-cation or spa moment?
My spa moment in San Francisco has recently started to be at Onsen Spa for its traditional Japanese baths and onsite hip eatery.
Best recent SF discovery?
My most recent discovery in San Francisco has been the Smokestack at Magnolia Brewery. It’s not uber-new, but I went for my first time recently, and loved the design and the beers on tap.
Describe your ideal food day in SF.
My ideal food day in San Francisco starts with toast from the Mill, and always their classic cinnamon sugar spread. Afterwards I would grab my coffee at Wrecking Ball, catch up with some of my favorite baristas while sipping down a cortado. I don’t like a fussy lunch but also want it to be packed with flavor, so I head to Yamo for Burmese. My final meal would be at Saru, experiencing their omakase, with a combination of a sashimi and salmon tasting. Dessert can never be skipped, and Bi-Rite ice cream is my favorite spot for soft serve.
Where do you take your business meetings and why?
My favorite spot to take business meetings is 20th Century Café as it has a wide variety of drinks and small bites, plus it is not usually busy.
Where do you take visitors for dinner and why?
For first-timer’s in San Francisco, always Tacolicious. It is a San Francisco staple that blends the best of Mexican fare and modern preparations. The tacos and creative margaritas (try the passion-habanero version) will put anyone in a good mood.
Where in SF do you go to get inspired?
My go-to spot has been the Conservatory of Flowers because of its incredible lushness and soft light. Alternatively, the newly renovated MOMA is a stunning museum with multiple floors of art and great architecture. I love places that pay equal attention to the space as well as what goes inside of it.
How do you get away, everyday?
This has been the toughest thing for me to do, as time on the road is exciting and then it can be slow at home. My solution has been to find the extraordinary in the ordinary. Moments like the craft and care in making a pour over coffee or preparing a meal — I’ve found that I can escape into beautiful moments everyday no matter where I am.
