A traveling fitness pro shares the best headphones for running (or flying), a full-body workout using only a suitcase, and more.
“I’ve worked out in the smallest, weirdest places: hotel hallways, outside of elevators, in theaters, in dressing rooms, in hotel rooms, in conference rooms—everywhere!” says fitness guru Tiffani Robbins. “I always say if you have enough room to lay on the floor, you have enough room to work out.”
Before she landed in New York, Robbins was a musical theatre pro, working on cruises, in touring musicals, and even at Disney World. But to pay the bills between gigs, Robbins became a fitness instructor, capturing audiences’ attention not on stage, but online.
Now a trainer at obé, an online fitness series built especially for on-the-go gym rats, Robbins specializes in creating workouts without boundaries. Below, the expert shares her tips for getting fit while getting away, including her favorite shoes and apparel, the best headphones for running, and instructions for a full-body travel workout using just an Away Bigger Carry-On.
The best shoes for exercise and exploration
I always have my running shoes with me, which I use for obé, running, and walking around. My current favorites are Mizunos—I like the Wave Horizon Model. I also really like ASICS. I wore Ecco shoes all over Italy. My feet get beat up because I work out for a living, so I need an actually comfy shoe. Eccos are really great, and they look cute.
A keep-it-simple makeup routine
I like being able to make myself look awake in three minutes, but I am super minimalistic when it comes to makeup. I get lash extensions because I sweat for a living, so that’s worth it for me. Otherwise, I use NARS concealer, Make Up For Ever powder, MAC bronzer, and for my bottom lashes, I use BUXOM mascara.
Skincare for post-gym or post-plane
I’m also very minimalistic when it comes to skincare. I wash my face every night and make sure all my makeup’s off using micellar water. I’ve started using a vitamin C serum, and then I use a moisturizing serum from Cocokind—I love how clean and simple it is.
When I work out with obé, I obviously wear makeup because people are watching me on camera and there are bright lights. I love Ducalm face and body wipes to take the makeup off right when I’m done instead of just letting the makeup and sweat sit on my face. They’re big and thick, so you never need more than one or two.
Top gifts for the traveling gym rat
I have a lot of different workout leggings on my radar this year, specifically from Carbon38. They have all the different brands: Alo Yoga, Beyond Yoga, and their own Carbon38 brand (those are my favorite). Outdoor Voices tech sweat leggings and bras—they have matching sets that are really cute. I am a little picky, especially with leggings. Lululemon Wunder Unders are super sleek—no pockets, nothing fancy—they just fit really well. You could wear them with a nice sweater and not look like you’re going to the gym, or you can wear them to the gym!
I also love Madewell’s transport tote. I use it all the time to travel as well—it’s a giant bag you can throw everything in. The GHD hair straightener is one of the top things on my gift guide.
Comfort is key
I am a comfort addict, especially comfy clothes that don’t look too sloppy and don’t make you look like you just rolled out of bed. I usually wear a comfy pair of leggings on the plane or a nice pair of sweatpants and a cozy sweater. My current favorite brands are Aloe Yoga and I’ve always, always been a Lululemon devotee. I usually always have at least two sweatshirts with me: I’ve got my obé sweatshirt—super cozy—and I also have this warm, fuzzy fleece from Fabletics if it’s colder on the plane.
The best headphones for running or flying
I have these SENSO headphones—they’re the cheapest and best Bluetooth wireless headphones from Amazon. They’re literally $20, so you can lose them or they can break and you can just buy them again. I used to have Beats, but they died literally every two times I used them—maybe I was sweating too much, but these are like the knockoff version of them and much cheaper.
The Away Bigger Carry-On 9-Step Workout
We were in Florence, Italy, at a giant train station. I gave my Instagram husband my phone, found a spot, and decided to come up with some moves that I could do with my suitcase. The suitcase is full; if you do it with an empty suitcase, it’ll wobble around. [Click here for the full 9-step workout.]
